Valium is a benzodiazepine with Central Nervous Depressants properties and a somewhat flatter dose-response slope than the sedative-hypnotic medications.

In animals, Valium appears to act on parts of the the thalamus, limbic system and hypothalamus, and induces calming results. Valium, unlike reserpine and chlorpromazine, has no demonstrable peripheral autonomic blocking action, nor does it produce extrapyramidal side effects; however, animals treated with Valium do have transient ataxia at higher doses. Valium was found to have transient cardiovascular depressor results among dogs. Long-term studies in rats showed no disturbances of endocrine function. Injections into animals have produced localized irritation of tissue around injections and some thickening of veins after intravenous usage.

Peak blood levels are attained within 1-2 hours after administration of Valium. With the parenteral form, peak blood levels are attained within 15 minutes after intravenous administration and are of the same magnitude as after oral administration of the drug.
